Henderson opened the fight with a takedown, but quickly got caught in a guillotine choke attempt. He extricated himself from this predicament only to find himself in a triangle choke that appeared for a moment to be a potential fight ending submission. That would not be the case, however, and Henderson would take control in the last half of the round with his powerful takedowns and ‘ground and pound’ punching assault.

Rounds two and three were all Henderson, as he took Cerrone down almost at will and began to pummel him on the ground. Cerrone managed a couple of submission attempts from the bottom, and did what he could to keep Henderson off of him with upkicks but nowhere near enough to salvage either round.

The tide would turn again in the fourth round, as Cerrone began to time Henderson’s takedown attempts. He had another potential fight ending submission attempt in the fifth round, as he locked in an arm bar and appeared to have good leverage as he twisted Henderson’s arm into a nasty angle. The decision itself was somewhat surprising, with Henderson winning all three judges’ scorecards by identical 48-47 scores. He’d clearly won rounds two and three, while Cerrone was the obvious winner of rounds four and five. The movie follows, who else, The Goonies. This gang of misfits, led by Mikey Walsh, is known around the city of Astoria, Oregon for always getting into some sort of trouble. The story really kicks off when the rich folks in town decide to buy up the neighborhood to convert it into a golf course. The city of Astoria is really gorgeous, and it’s too bad that it only features prominently in the first act of the film before it gets into the cave-dwelling adventure stuff.

So, the Goonies have to go get some buried treasure to save their neighborhood. They find a treasure map in dad’s attic, they go to a restaurant on the edge of town where it turns out there are some Italian gangsters known as the Fratellis hiding out, and keeping their little brother, Sloth, a gigantic, deformed monster with a heart of gold chained up to a chair watching black and white TV all day. So the kids have to somehow get into the caves under the restaurant and find the treasure without getting the Fratellis’ attention and…

Does the plot sound complicated? It actually isn’t, it’s just really fast paced. Don’t worry, you don’t have to keep all of this in mind. From moment to moment, all the booby traps, gangsters and grown ups are really doing is giving the Goonies something to run away from while they bond as friends and seek out the treasure to save their neighborhood.

It’s really just a whole lot of fun. It inspires you with a sense of adventure, like this stuff can happen in real life. While it’s not likely that it WILL happen, the movie is at least rooted enough in reality that it doesn’t get into the supernatural or anything like that, so it could, technically, happen in real life, no matter how implausible and unlikely that might be.

The film was thought to be incredibly fast paced, a little too break-neck, when it was released, but times have changed. The film is allegedly based on Heart of Darkness, the novel, but outside of a few key parallels, the two are very different stories, albeit sharing a similar nihilistic tone and a few moments. We have Dennis Hopper as a maniacal photo journalist, and Robert Duvall as Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore, a mix of samurai, Patton and surfer dude, sending his men out to hit the waves amidst napalm detonating against the beach.

This isn’t even getting into the main cast, these characters appear for one scene and then disappear from the film forever. Marlon Brando as Colonel Kurtz doesn’t even appear until the very end, but his presence, his mere existence, casts a shadow that commands the entirety of the film, despite his limited screen time, or perhaps, mythologized by his non-presence.

The film works on every level. It’s an incredible action film, a fascinating political statement, it’s funny, and, at times, it’s even endearing. However, while it succeeds on all these levels, the nihilism cast over the film by Kurtz and Willard eventually overwhelms all these other aspects and creates a film that is dark, psychedelic, and a frightening look into the human heart.

John Woo and Ringo Lam defined the Heroic Bloodshed genre alongside To with films like Hard Boiled and City on Fire, and To was always considered sort of the third wheel of the genre. This film, however, is much different from anything you might have seen from that era of Hong Kong action.

The movie has an odd, dreamlike quality to it. An opening gunfight has a bathroom door fly off its hinges and it twirls gracefully around the room until the firefight finally ends. Later we see a character throw a Red Bull can into the air, and the entire gunfight happens in slow motion before the can hits the ground. This is a bullet ballet.

The action is clear and coherent, the story isn’t always so clear. This actually helps the film’s dreamlike feel, so if you just watch it for the characters and for the action, the weird, twisty-turny story won’t infringe upon your enjoyment of the film and what it really does have to offer the viewer.
